North of the church, against the northern enclosure wall, the rock itself was hollowed out and made into a burial place. Not built — cut. One mass of stone, worked into two storeys of graves.
The lower level is reached through an opening immediately inside the entrance and holds three tombs, one to each side. The upper level holds three along the north, three along the south and two along the east.
Every one of them ends at the west, and at that end the rock is shaped into something like a pillow, so that the head of the man laid there would rest on it. That detail is the whole tomb: a community that slept on stone in life, carving stone pillows for each other in death.
One further grave lies outside the group, cut into the rock that forms part of the northern wall.
